Currently, there is a drastic shortage of accommodation for low income Canberran seniors. While approximately 40% of ACT Housing residents are aged 65 and over, it is clear both the public and private accommodation sectors are performing below par in generating sufficient stocks to meet demand. With the numbers of seniors growing (baby boomers as well as seniors generally living longer), neither the public or private sector appear to have any evident plans to address the shortfall of unmet demand. This motion calls on the ACT Government to take the initiative in broadening the accommodation options available for low income seniors in particular by repurposing current public and private properties.
General Resolution
Housing for Low Income Seniors in the ACT
ACT Labor calls on the ACT Government to examine existing ACT Housing stock and any other properties owned by the ACT Government with a view to repurposing them to accommodate low income seniors, where possible, proximity to their current community within the term of the next government.
