There are currently over 5000 seniors (aged largely between their mid 70s and the mid 80s) living in retirement villages mostly owned/operated by For-Profit or faith-based corporates. Downsizing by seniors often places them into a basic power imbalance where the rules are made by the owner/operators and their legal advisers, where those seniors are often exploited financially and where seniors are subjected to one way communication and demeaning and bullying conduct. There is a virtual absence of community organisation in the retirement village space which this motion seeks to make good by calling on the ACT Government to enter this space with public and community based housing options including retirement villages and supported accommodation (esp for single, low income seniors).
General Resolution
Establishment of Community Based Retirement and Supported in the ACT
That ACT Labor calls on the ACT Government to commence a programme to construct and operate a portfolio of community based not for profit retirement villages and supported accommodation for seniors in the ACT within the term of the next government.
