Chapter 27, Clause 21 of the Platform reads:“Legislate against the discarding of edible food by supermarkets, market stalls and food producers. Provide
funding to augment existing infrastructure to increase the distribution of edible food to
Canberra’s free food outlets”
It is notable that despite the significant progress on green waste collection in this term of government,
there is no indication of the commencement of a scheme to ban the waste of edible food. In an
environment when rising inflation has put many of Canberra's most vulnerable in dire straits,
this is a shocking oversight. Cost-of-living pressures must not impede every Canberran's right to
fresh and nutritious food. We call upon the government to provide a report-back at the earliest
opportunity to discuss progress on this measure.
